Our model is showing a strong edge on the Pirates in this matchup, and this number is simply too high for the way this game sets up.

Baltimore is the better team on paper, but this is not a spot where that edge shows up cleanly. Baz hasn’t demonstrated the ability to consistently separate and frankly is pretty overrated by our pitching metrics.

That should leave the door open for Pittsburgh.

We’re starting to see price inflation on the Yankees after their hot start to the season. They’re priced like there’s a clear gap here, but the matchup doesn’t really support it.

Eury Perez is good enough to keep this game under control early, and Miami’s offense can create just enough pressure — putting balls in play, extending at-bats — against a starter in Will Warren who is still settling in.

Everything about the setup points to a tighter game. Run projections are basically even, and with a lower total, outcomes tend to stay clustered.

That’s not where you want to be laying a big price.

If this is close through five, it turns into a bullpen game where variance takes over and the edge shifts toward the dog.

The line is simply too high for this type of game.

This is an ace tax spot.

Skenes is driving the number, but the underlying gap doesn’t justify this kind of separation.

Andrew Abbott is a strong enough counter to keep this game controlled early, and the Cincinnati Reds offense is built to generate just enough pressure — contact, traffic, and pitch count — especially with Skenes unlikely to go deep.

Quietly, this also sets up well on the back end. The Reds didn’t need their top bullpen arms yesterday, so they come in fresh with a clear leverage advantage once this gets past the starters.

Projection is tight, outcomes cluster around one run, and the number is stretched.

This is an environment-driven play with 15mph+ out-blowing winds to dead center in Camden Yards and the model is indicating a shift in the baseline more than the number reflects. The model implies a game closer to 9.5, while the market is still sitting at 8.5.

That gap matters.

Texas carries a heavy share of the scoring expectation here against a contact-friendly profile, and in this environment, contact turns into damage. You don’t need sustained rallies — mistakes get punished quickly.

On the other side, Jacob deGrom is still a high-end arm, but the number is being held down by what he used to be. You don’t need to beat peak deGrom to get over this total — you just need him not to control the entire game.

With the environment doing the heavy lifting, that’s enough.

This feels like a spot where the market is telling a story. Dodgers, Roki Sasaki debut hype, momentum — all the things that tend to get priced aggressively early in the season. Cleveland sits on the other side of that after a blowout loss, which usually lingers in the number more than it should and can provide a motivational boost. But once you get past the noise, this is a much tighter game than it looks, particularly in a clean west coast travel spot for the Guardians and what we have as a neutral pitching matchup.

Take the juicy price on the dawg.

They’re coming off of a 15-inning war against the Tigers where they practically depleted their entire bullpen in a ‘tear down the goalposts’ series clincher. They not only have a massive bullpen disadvantage tonight, but also a travel disadvantage having to travel across the country on short rest. This is a great spot to ladder bet the Blue Jays who should be licking their chops tonight.

Our model has this matchup fairly priced before adjusting for the spot; however, the spot adjustment gets us over the top to back the pinstripes. The Yankees were flat out embarrassed in the first two games of this series in Toronto and now return to the Bronx with their backs against the wall. They’ve got the pitching edge, the motivational edge and what figures to be a raucous home field advantage. While they will probably lose this series, this is the spot to back ‘em. Harnessing Hemingway’s prose, we’ll attempt to ladder bet the pinstripes in Game Three.

1. Los Angeles Dodgers (-130) @ Philadelphia Phillies (O/U 7.5)

Our model makes this game pick ‘em so we’ll take the +money on the home dawg in a must win spot. Blake Snell has been on an absolute heater for the Dodgers over his last four starts and the market is obviously factoring in his form to hold- this might be a nice sell high spot. Jesus Luzardo is adequately rested and has been in solid form since the All-Star break. Moreover, his night game splits are significantly better than his day game splits. Look for the Phillies offense to be able to engineer runs against Snell in what should be an electric environment at Citizens Bank Ballpark as they try to equalize the series before heading out west.

1. New York Yankees (+105) @ Toronto Blue Jays (O/U 8.0)

Our model is showing a nice edge on the Over in this matchup projecting a total score of almost 10 Runs. This partially stems from the Blue Jays somewhat stubbornly deciding to start veteran Kevin Gausman who has been teed off on in his last two starts- one of them being a wildcard-clinching effort. Moreover, he hasn’t been effective in the playoffs over his 13 year career, sporting an ERA of nearly 5. Blue Jays manager John Schneider when pressed on the decision echoed an archaic axiom, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Another resounding loss for analytics. On the other side of the bump, Luis Gil has a tendency to walk a lot of batters and the Blue Jays are very effective at playing small ball and this could be a recipe for runs. Both of these angles lead us to the Over in this spot.

Selection: Over 8.0 (-105) to Win 2 units.

2. Detroit Tigers (+180) @ Seattle Mariners (O/U 7.0)

Our model is showing a nice edge on the Tigers in this matchup projecting their fair ML price to be closer to +130 and their fair RL price to be closer to -165. Tigers starter Trey Molton got touched in his wildcard appearance on Wednesday giving up 4 earned runs while only recording one out. Tigers manager AJ Hinch will have him on a tight leash early and what could become a bullpen game. We believe the market is overreacting to the Tigers pitching scenario and we will trust our numbers as we attempt to ladder bet the road dawg.

1. Cincinnati Reds (+220) @ Los Angeles Dodgers (O/U 8.0)

Our model is showing a nice edge on the Under in this matchup projecting a total score of approximately 7 Runs. We believe that the market is mispricing the Reds pitching due to Zach Littell being the named starter and we’re anticipating him to serve more of an opener role setting up for Nick Lodolo. Lodolo has been extremely effective this season and should be able to navigate the Dodgers lineup. On the flip side, Yamamoto shouldn’t have too much trouble dealing against an uninspiring Reds offense. Moreover, both bullpens are in good shape given the blowout nature of the game last night so look for the best arms to be used late tonight in a low scoring affair.

1. Boston Red Sox (+115) @ New York Yankees (O/U 7.0)

Our model is showing a significant edge on the Under in this game projecting a total score of approximately 6 Runs. This is a fantastic pitching matchup featuring two of baseball’s best and we expect them to have their ‘A’ stuff in this rivalry riddled, post-season spot. Moreover, there are fairly strong in-blowing winds projected at Yankee Stadium which should add further run protection for two starters who frankly shouldn’t need it. This game has pitching duel written all over it.

Selection: Under 7.0 (-105) to Win 2 units.

2. Cincinnati Reds (+165) @ Los Angeles Dodgers (O/U 7.5)

Our model is showing a nice edge on the Reds in this spot projecting a fair ML closer to +130. They were able to backdoor their way into the wildcard spot with the help of the Miami Marlins (to the detriment of the Mets broadcast crew). The Reds feature some of the strongest pitching in all of baseball- both their starting rotation and their bullpen are rock solid. Hunter Greene has been elite and while projected Dodgers starter Blake Snell has been in fantastic form recently we do not give a pitching edge to the Dodgers in this matchup. The Dodgers offense is certainly more trustworthy than the Reds, but not to the extent that the market is pricing. Additionally, the Dodgers are 5-1 vs. the Reds this year and despite their World Series aspirations they might have a tendency to overlook the Reds- especially in this first game of the series. On the other hand, Tito Francona is a clubhouse guru and a bona fide master of player psychology and will have his club playing with a ‘nothing to lose’ mentality which could provide key in igniting their offense. We think the Cincinnatus Red Stockings, America’s first professional baseball team, will be able to keep it within a run and possibly even pull off the upset in their much anticipated return to the playoffs.

Our model is showing a decent edge on the Red Stockings in this interesting NL Central matchup. There is a stark motivational contrast as the Reds need this game like blood trying to keep their Wildcard hopes alive. On the other hand, the Brewers don’t have much to play for as they’ve already already locked up the division and might be more focused on making sure their bullpen is in prime shape heading into the post-season. Although Brewers starting pitcher Quinn Priester sports a gaudy 13-2 record as a starter this season, his advanced metrics aren’t that impressive. Meanwhile, Zach ‘The Lisp’ Littell has been serviceable for Cincinnati and we think he’ll be able to keep them in this game. The Reds offense has been uninspiring as of late, but they’ve shown the ability all season long to be able to play up to their competition. Look for Tito Francona to make the appropriate moves with the lineup card to remedy the offensive issues and the rock steady Reds bullpen to keep them in this game late as the Brewers might be resting their best relief arms. Take the generous +money on the motivated dawg.

Janson Junk, who sports a very fitting name, likes to give up a lot of hits and we’d been fading Walker Buehler all season long for the Red Sox and although he now finds a new home in Philly, we’re not buying into him magically returning to his 2024 form. Our model is showing a nice edge on the Tigers in this spot projecting this game as pick ‘em. The AL Central divisional race has been well publicized as the Tigers have seemingly spit the bit losing their last 7 in a row and 11 of their last 12. On the other hand, the Indians have won an astounding 16 of their last 18 games. The Indians have now come all the way back from what appeared to be an insurmountable pennant chase to effectively stick their noses ahead of the Tigers as they have identical records and hold the tiebreaker. This dramatic juxtaposition will be on the forefront of the public’s betting psychology in this game and accounts for the 30 cents difference in the market’s pricing of this matchup versus our own. The correct play here is to hoist your contrarian flag, hold your nose and take the excessive +money on the Tigers who may find a motivational boost having their backs against the wall.
